EARLY AWARENESS COMMITTEE
Report to Executive Council , January 29, 2006
COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
Stephanie Atti (D’Youville)
Laura Burns(Wells)
LaSonya Griggs (Ithaca)
Brian Ghanoo (Fordham)
Sherwood Johnson (CUNY Brooklyn)
Susan Nesbitt Perez (CICU, Outreach Programs)
Alice Roberson (HESC, Gear-up Program Associate).
Committee met via two conference calls : January 12th and 25th. Discussed projects designed to reach out to the Middle School Guidance counselor.
First Project: Design packet of information to send to counselors. Include an 11” X 17” ‘Did You Know’ poster. With this poster we hope to not only update the counselor’s awareness, but reach other educators in the schools and ultimately, the parents who visit. A ‘Did You Know ‘corresponding brochure would be part of the packet and list information such as saving plans, websites, and special aid programs. In turn, this ‘Did You Know’ brochure can be distributed to families. The counselor’s packet would also contain our prior pieces, the ‘It’s Sooner Than You Think’ bookmark and brochure. A committee member is also searching for other brochures on special programs that may be applicable.
An organization was located that may be able to assist us with identifying counselors in the middle schools- the NYS Middle School Association. This is a fairly large organization of educators that holds an annual NYS conference and has 2000-3000 attendees. One of this association’s goals is to implement a collaborative relationship with universities and departments of higher education. I sent a letter on January 24th to the President of NYSMSA seeking to develop one of these collaborative relationships. Samples of our bookmark, brochure and wristband were sent with the letter.
Second Project: discussion of workshops for middle school counselors. The committee wholly supports in-person interaction with the middle school counselors and will further discuss workshops as work progresses on our first project.
Additional 3000 wristbands were ordered; piggybacked on the Gear-UP project order of 7000.
Cost was .33 per item. Currently, the only plan for these 3000 are as a giveaway at the State Fair.
Costs for poster and new brochure: Poster design $150-175, $669 for first 1000 posters , $65 for additional 1000. Brochure price would be the same prices as our prior brochure, $215 for design, and approx .03 per item for a 200,000 order. Total costs for two projects: approx $7100.
NASFAA State Award entry:
I participated in a conference call on January 18 with Sharon Karwowski and Judi Miladin to discuss the award entry - Higher Education Day at the NYS Fair. Work is progressing on the entry to be entered by the deadline of February 28th.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Teodecki, Chair
