1997 FATHER JOSEPH DUNNE SERVICE AWARD is presented to:

Debra K. Schreiber
The Father Joseph Dunne Service Award is named in memory of the Late Reverend Joseph Dunne, former Executive Director of Niagara University and a "Founding Father" of NYSFAAA. The Dunne Service Award is annually awarded to a member who has served the organization with commitment and professionalism at a level above and beyond their own region. Debra Schreiber is such an individual.

Her career began at Monroe Community College right here in Rochester where she began under the able supervision of Bob Bleadow, who would become a lifetime mentor. She continued her career at Oglethorpe College, then as Director of Grants and Scholarships at Penn State, then as Director of Aid at Keuka College. She then left Keuka for a leadership role at ACT, where she continued her passion to move student aid forward and to a higher level. Since then she has served in a variety of consulting roles over the past few years.

Deb served her region through the financial aid awareness program, guidance counselor workshops, regional training activities, and as a strong mentor for new and developing members. She served as chair of the statewide Federal Relations Committee and founded a ver popular "news Flash" letterhead that was used to discuss state and federal legislative positions. Deb also served as newsletter editor, and invented the "Dear Debbie" advise column, which helped bring humor to her colleagues. She has served as a presenter at EASFAA, NASFAA, NYSFAAA, and a consultant to regional and national focus groups on a plethora of issues.

Deb has always been a champion of doing what's right for students first and foremost. She has been and continues to be committed to informed decision making by students, and all who have had the opportunity to work with Deb have benefited from her unique, honest, and most peasant style.

In her spare time she is an accomplished writer. Presently she has a novel "on hold" while she works on educational materials for her high school alma mater. Deb, who's chairperson of "The Schreiber Group" is also an excellent golfer and credits her "everyready bunny-like energy" to the clean fresh water of Keiki Lake.

It is an honor to present the Father Joseph Dunne Service Award to DEBRA K. SCHREIBER.

1997 NYSFAAA ACHIEVEMENT AWARD is presented to:

Scott Atkinson
The NYSFAAA Achievement Award was originally established to be awarded to colleagues based on national and/or regionally recognized contributions or service to the student financial aid field or the advancement of our profession. This year's recipient has spent more than two decades meeting not one, but all of the desired criteria for this award.

Nationally, the recipient and his staff received the Institutional Model of Quality Award in 1993. He also received the Quality Control Leadership Award and the Individual Award for the Advancement of Quality Control. He usually serves as a federal trainer at Quality Assurance workshops and annual conferences. He currently is the representative for New York State and Puerto Rico for the National Coalition for Direct Lending.

Under service to the financial aid field, some of his contributions include: Chair, Loan Service Concerns Committee; NYSHESC Loan Advisory Board; Program Chair, 1990 Annual Conference; Co-Chair of the NYSFAAA Scholarship Committee; the Loan Processing Committee; the Regional Speakers Bureau; FAAM; and this list of service goes on and on.

His advancement of the profession is second to none. He spends countless hours assisting colleagues with financial aid questions and concerns. He is constantly working on various committees when time is simply not available. He rarely says "No" when his expertise is requested.
