Conference Calls will replace previous in-person meetings. Current NYSFAAA Membership is low. Schools encouraged having staff re-new membership for 09/10. College Access Grant Proposal - $1,000 provided to each region. Region 1 must follow through on training by June 2010. Future Meetings/Training November 17, 2009 Region 1 & 2 Training at GCC. Topic: DL & Veterans December 10, 2009 Pearl Street Grill February 25, 2010 ECC March 25, 2009 Villa Maria College May 27, 2010 Buffalo State College Committee Updates: High School Counselor Workshop: Kathy Michalski: The Counselor workshops will be done in conjunction with HESCs Guidance Expos. NYSFAAA will be given the first two hours of the full day program. Topics to be covered will include the Federal Update and other topic(s) still under consideration. Guidance Expos: October 19th Whiteplains, New York November 2nd Albany, New York November 4th Syracuse, New York November 5th Rochester, New York November 6th Buffalo/Niagara Convention Center. St. Bonaventure November 20th (tentative) Half-day event presented by NYSFAAA. Awards Committee: Region 1 Service Award nominations to Kevin Ryan. Region 1 did not nominate or award a Service Award for 2008/2009. Kevin Ryan the last recipient for the 07/08 year. Rising Star Region 1 did not nominate for 2008/2009. Brent McEnroe last recipient for 2007/2008. Please send nominations for 2009/2010 to Kevin Ryan ASAP. Membership committee: Pushing membership membership is down. Please encourage your staff to register their membership soon. College Goal Sunday: Ambrose Price Saturday, February 6, 2010. Tentatively planned for Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (same location as 2009). Volunteers will be needed. Niagara Falls and Jamestown will host programs dates TBA. In 2007 College Goal Sunday had 13 sites with 609 students served. In 2009 there were 17 sites with 1,148 students served. State Wide Web-Letter: news, articles, announcements to Laura Worley by Monday, September 28, 2009. Support Staff Training/Workshop: suggestion was made to have the workshop during the 2009/2010 academic year. Theresa Giesehe at ASA volunteered the Professional Services department at ASA to work with NYSFAAA on this event. Suggestion was made for a combined training for Region 1 & 2 in June. Location TBD concern on distance from home or office for staff to travel. Suggestion to use Survey Monkey ask DFAs what topics they would like to see the support staff trained on. Request to combine significant substance in topics while making the day fun. Theresa and Rachel Barker (UB) to take the lead on this event. NYSFAAA Conference 2010 Buffalo, NY Co-Chairs: Kevin Ryan (UB) and two more to be confirmed by Kevin. Display needed for 2009 Conference in Saratoga Springs. Kevin to reach out to Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, perhaps provide a Buffalo trinket to promote the conference. Do not plan to have a conference theme for 2010/ Co-chairs will meet and send an email to Region 1 members. ALL MEMBERS of Region 1 are encouraged to volunteer for the Conference. NYSFAAA Conference 2009 Saratoga Springs, NY Wii Bowling tournament Leigh Bove at Great Lakes is coordinating the Region 1 team. Please reach out to Leigh if interested in participating. Silent Auction Theme Basket Jennifer Pollard coordinating. Please contact Jennifer (Jennifer.pollard@salliemae.com) if you want to donate an item to the Buffalo Theme basket. $100 budget has been set for the basket but donations are also welcome. HESC Update: Dawn Langdon NYHELPS Applications sent to all DFAs in New York State. The applications are due October 9, 2009. A lot of questions on the logistics of the program. Dawn encouraged questions to be directed to Lisa Simpson at HESC. Please refer to HESC update on HESC website or the handout from an attendee at the meeting. School, Lender & Guarantor News Rachel Barker and John Smith joined the staff at the University at Buffalo over the summer.
