NYSFAAA Executive Council Report

Reminders
If you need any NYSFAAA letterhead or envelopes please let me know
If you would like to use our conferencing capabilities for your
NYSFAAA committee, please let me know

There was an abbreviated Executive Council meeting held at the Long
Island Conference. Karen Price Scott George submitted her
resignation as 2nd Vice President. Maria Barlaam has been elected
by the council to complete Karen’s remaining year. Maria has
already contacted me in an effort to get some topics back on track.
It is unclear if she will run for election / re-election. One of
the areas that I am excited about deals with establishing a
clearing house for trainers and training topics on the NYSFAAA web
site. This idea originated in this region at a regional meeting.
Earl Tretheway would like anyone offering training to funnel the
event information to him as Communications Chair: consensus was to
only post events that have “open” access to NYSFAAA members. As a
region it would make sense that our Program Committee would be
responsible for getting our training information to Earl or at the
very least to me so I can get it to Earl.

I have requested training money from the State Treasurer to help
cover our Support Staff workshop.

Treasury Report

Abbey reported the treasury has $1,212.98. She just received the
$1,000 training check from NYSFAAA and had not deposited it yet.
She still had to pay the Craftsman for the Support Staff workshop.
She expects the balance after all bills are paid to be around
$1,200. She reminded us that we still have the $800 training grant
available if we needed it for regional training this year.

She said the State Treasurer had a meeting at the NYSFAAA
conference for all regional treasurers. Some procedures need to be
enforced or changed. Abbey told us when we hold an event that we
charge for we need to provide her with a detailed report. This
should include a Roster of the participants, how they paid (cash or
check #). Expense reports need to be complete and signed by the
Chair of that committee before being submitted to Abbey. She
reminded us that we are Tax Exempt and she had the correct forms to
be used for that. She was asked to endorse all checks “For deposit
only and the account number”.

Nancy asked Abbey to create a section on the Regional Treasurer’s
responsibilities and procedures for the Region 3 Procedure manual.

Sharon brought up that Executive Council is working on establishing
the ability to use Credit Cards for payment. Holly recommended and
several Lenders concurred that we should check into American
Express and their services.

State Update

Gerry Christie gave the NYS HESC update. He said there is a HESC
Workshop in Syracuse on December 9th at the Windham. You can
register for the workshop at www.hesc.org. The training grants
have been renewed for those schools that had them this year.

Regional Business
Committee reports:

Support Staff Workshop
Wednesday, October 26, 2005 Region 3 held its Support Staff
Workshop at the Craftsman Inn in Fayetteville. Committee members
included: Karen Blankenburg, Sheila Cooley, Jackie Darquea, Scott
Lewis, Lorraine Mothershed, Gina Soliz, and Darcie Stephens.

50 Support Staff from the region registered. Ther registration fee
per person was $10.00. Patti Carey of EdFund presented “Journey
of Change” and Laura Mills-Lewis presented “Why can’t we all just
get along” 90% of the evaluations collected rated the overall
quality of the workshop to be “Good” to Excellent”.

Guidance Counselor
November 4, 2005 there was Guidance Counselors workshop held in
Binghamton. 40 participants attended. It was discovered that day
that there was a State Wide Guidance event in Rochester which may
have accounted for the lower attendance. Last year 75 counselors
attended. Evaluations were Good to Excellent.

November 18, 2005 there is a Guidance Counselor workshop scheduled
in Syracuse. Currently there are 140 participants registered. The
number is up from last year. Some thought might be that the
counselors that could not attend Binghamton are now coming to
Syracuse.

CAAN
Annette reported that there are two Forms Workshops planned.
LeMoyne is scheduled for January 7th and Mohawk Valley Community
College is scheduled for January 14th. There will be the call-in TV
show again-date to be announced. Eileen will be doing the media
coverage and will be looking for “TV Stars”. If interested contact
her.

It was brought up that “Ask the Expert” in not working. It is
asking for a password.

Program Committee
Kathy reported that they are currently working on speakers and
times. She suggested that in the Spring we try to contact who we
want for speakers for the up coming year. There would be less
conflict with schedules.

December Meeting
Sean reported on his progress on planning the December meeting. The
training topic will be identity theft. The date will be December
16th at the Sherwood Inn. The meeting will start with coffee at
9:00 am and lunch being served at 11:30 am. The cost for the meal
is $21.00. After much discussion concerning defraying the cost with
regional funds and charges for non NYSFAAA members it was voted
that Region 3 would defray $6.00 of the cost. Therefore
NYSFAAA Members will pay $15.00 and Non NYSFAAA Members will pay
the full cost of $21.00.

New Business
There has been some problem getting the minutes posted. Nancy has
posted all the correct dates to the NYSFAAA Calendar. Please check
the dates as some have changed. What is on the Web is correct.

Training Presentation
