Region V Executive Council Report

September 14 – 15, 2006          Adams Mark                Buffalo, NY

Times are a changing.  Some parts of NYSFAAA’s governance will be changed once President-Elect Dave Canaski takes office. Work has already begun on streamlining many of the statewide committees and their reporting structure. The new committee structure will be posted to the website in the near future.

Reports were given for the various committees. Of note, Novice will be held at SUNY Cobleskill again. The issues of the campus construction have been resolved and the new steam pipes will certainly provide all the hot water the attendees could ever need. For those who did not hear, the campus refitted all the steam access to our facilities. Hot water was supplied by rented water heaters that weren’t ready for the demand. Some of the attendees, including yours truly, were honored with the health benefits of cold showers. Executive Council approved a new agenda for the workshop which allows it to begin on Sunday afternoon.

Early Awareness has begun to focus on middle school outreach. Region 5 is not represented on this committee. Anyone interested should contact me soon.

The Training Committee has been busy. EASFAA will provide 2 Verification workshops in our area. One workshop will be held on 10/11 at Citizens Bank in Albany. Contact Lisa Simpson at HESC for further information. The other workshop will be held at FIT on 10/26/2006.

Jim Briggs will do the advanced tax workshops throughout the state. He’s in our area on 2/13/2006 (Long Island) and 2/15/2006 (NYC).

Region 1 (Buffalo) held a workshop for Admissions Advisors that was well received. Topics included Financial Aid 101, Determining Need, PJ, and Gov’t changes.  We may want to add this to our cross training efforts.

Conference 2006 is ready for us.  The committee reports that the Crowne Plaza is fully booked but rooms are still available at the Best Western and Hilton. Shuttle service between the hotels will run throughout the conference. Check out the website for more recent updates and activity.
