Introduction

The meeting began by welcoming everyone and an introduction of the day’s speaker, Shan Cope from Jacksonville, Florida. (Anna Kopit)

Treasurer’s report (Shelley Worrell)

Everyone was reminded that sponsorship requests for the holiday meeting having been sent out and several checks had already been received.

Membership Update (Joan Warren)

In 2004-2005 NYSFAAA’s statewide membership totaled 1,209.

2005-2006 YTD total is 1,165 (44 more are needed to reach last year’s level).

Region 6 had 395 members in 2004-2005.

To date, there are 358 paid members (37 more are needed to reach last year’s level).

Currently there are 32 open invoices.

There are 156 non-current members who were members last year and 347 total non-current members in the data base.

Each region has a membership chair. Tony Thompson is the chair for Region 6.

Executive Council has approved credit card payments.

NYSFAAA members are now able to update their information on the web via the Membership Database. Joan encouraged all members to review their data for accuracy and to also complete the optional questions. The more information that is known about the members, the better programming can be provided.

Joan also informed the group that members may attend meetings in other regions.  Since each region updates the calendar with meeting dates and topics, it’s easy to see what is going on in other regions.  In addition, other membership benefits include the Connection Newsletter, and Job Postings.

On signing up for the listserv:  Members may sign up for the State-wide listserv (NYSFA-L) while submitting their on-line application, or by accessing the Listserv section of the website: http://www.nysfaaa.org/docs/toc_listservs.html.  In order to sign up for the Regional list, members must do so by accessing the Listserv section of the site.  Members may sign up for more than one regional listserv.  This service is for paid members only.

Abridged copies of the annual report were distributed to the attendees.

Executive Council Update (Angela VanDekker)

Angelica Bonfante-Esparza was thanked for the great entertainment provided at the conference. There were certainly more diverse activities to choose from.

The new VP of Training is Maria Barlaam.  Heather McDonnell from Sarah Lawrence replaced her as Region V Executive Council Representative.

The policy and Procedures Manual is being revised and stream lined in order to make it core consistent.

The budget was accepted.

Another call was issued for volunteers.

When holiday meeting are paid events, membership must be paid separately.

The next Executive Council Meeting will take place in December in Binghamton. Contact Angela VanDekker @  avandekker@fordham.edu

Committee Updates (Anna Kopit)

A list of committees was handed out, and the need for volunteers was mentioned.

Diversity Committee (Tony Thompson)

He needs help with this committee, please reach out to him if interested.

Government  Relations (Jim Vallee)

In the past this committee has consisted of 1 person.

Last year they took a contingency of 12 people to Washington and met with Legislators.

A 2nd trip is planned for this year. This committee is really trying to start new traditions.

Graduate Committee (Patrick Ziegler)

This committee really hasn’t done much in a long time.

A Graduate Symposium is being planned and will be geared towards Graduate Schools.

A data base of Graduate and Professional Schools may be developed.

Non-Traditional Concerns Committee (Anna Kopit)

If interested in joining this committee, contact akopit@aveda.com.

Claire Jacobi mentioned that Executive Council wants to eliminate this committee since there has been no activity.

After some discussion, it was noted that some individuals wanted to keep the committee on the books.

There is a diverse population of schools that makes up the committee and that special training i.e. clock hours, has been provided.

A question was raised regarding the amount of time one may need to devote to a committee.

Many committees conduct business via conference calls and emails.

Being involved on committees allows members to grasp a lot of ideas, meet people, influence and brings ideas back to their respective offices.

The Government Committee Chair mention that the 12 people that make up his committee had never met at one point.

College Aid Awareness Network (CAAN) (Angie Bonfante-Esparza)

This committee needs volunteers.

Early Awareness Committee (Brian Ghanoo)

Brian welcomed everyone and mentioned that the committee had won an award.

The main goal was to get a member of Region 6 on every committee.

If anyone is interested in a committee, they should contact the committee chairs to get more information. Your participation can be very rewarding.

The results of the survey were given.

There were 64 respondents out of a membership of 390+.

For copies of the survey result, contact Brian Ghanoo at Ghanoo@Fordham.edu

The speaker was reintroduced. Her topic of discussion was Quality Customer Service.

Hand outs were given out and audience participation was requested for the DESA Test.

The test allowed us to learn about various communication styles, how we need a little bit of each in the business world, and how we can incorporate them into our everyday work life.

HESC Update (Steve Sweet)

Training grants are available in the amounts of $1,000-$10,000 depending upon the size of the school.

The deadline to sign up for Administrative Workshops is November 16, 2005.

The workshops will take place on November 29-30 at CUNY’s Graduate Center.

There is nothing new with the FAFSA worksheet. July 7, 2007 is the filing deadline for 2006-2007.

EAC Workshop Summary

The paper SARS will be blue.

COD supports school assigned IDs and is attempting to move away from using social security numbers.

Conference 2007 Report (Clair Jacobi)

The tri-chairs are Claire Jacobi, Tony Olivero and Jim Murphy.

Everyone was encouraged to volunteer for a committee and sign up sheets were past around.

It was emphasized that the Publicity Committee’s responsibility is to market next year’s NYSFAAA Conference in Lake Placid.

Jim Murphy mentioned how long it had been since he attended a meeting and how many faces he recognized and didn’t recognize. Everyone introduces themselves.

Closing Remarks (Brian Ghanoo)

Everyone was reminded about the holiday meeting and registration forms were distributed.
