Executive Council Report December 2006

New York State Fair 2006

Let Admissions staff at your school know that Higher Education Day at the New York State Fair is September 1, 2006,  the Friday before Labor Day. This day gives us exposure to the 93,002 people attending the fair that day.

In a joint effort between CAAN and Early Awareness, NYSFAAA passed out bracelets to kids saying “I’m going to college,” our Early Awareness bookmarks, FAFSA wrappers, and other literature.  We also ran a drawing for two $500 scholarship good for any NYS college this fall.

Training

There will be three one-day Intermediate Workshops; one for Regions 1,2,3; one for  Regions 4,5,8 and one for Regions 6, and 7.

Unrelated business income.

All events that are sponsored by donations that will be made to NYSFAAA must have a business purpose in keeping with the intentions and the tax exempt status of the organization.  There needs to be a meeting with an agenda.  Strictly social events are okay as long as the funds do not flow the NYSFAAA treasury.

Website

NYSFAAA.org is the association’s website. We own NYSFAA.net and NYSFAAA.net.

Beware of false sites

NYSFAA.org with two rather than three “A”s is not our site.  We tried to buy it.

Some websites use names that can be misleading.  The President sought the help of Sallie Mae because the site linked to /Sallie Mae and several other lenders.  With Sallie Mae’s help the site was shut down. Be aware of misleading sites.

State Conference

When setting up a state conference, have your own contract, not just the hotels.

The Executive Council made a determination that the President will appoint two former conference chairs to provide guidance and be a liaison to the President and Treasurer.

Proprietary/Non-traditional Concerns Committee

Needs volunteers and needs to identify its direction and purpose

There was a discussion about the common interests of clock hour versus 2 & 4 year proprietary schools.  Clock hour seem to have more in common with Boces.

2 & 4 yr Proprietary have more in common with community colleges.

Service and Trademark

Executive Council voted to take advantage of an opportunity presented by EASFAA to have a service and trademark created.

Membership – There is $500 available for each region to use for activities to promote membership.  (A little more for region VI because of its size.)

Gear-up activities Anyone who did a financial aid presentation at a gear-up high school – (any NYC public school) Sept. 04 – June ’05, notify Cathy Bellomo or email me at Avandekker@fordham.edu.
