DATE: January 20, 2006 - 1/20/2006 Meeting Minutes - NYSFAAA Region VI

Heather McDonald, from Sarah Lawrence College, was the Presenter for
this meeting which focused on Needs Analysis and Professional Judgment.

The morning session covered needs analysis stressing how the specific
information and the tables are used to calculate need. In addition to
explaining the difference between Federal Methodology and
Institutional Methodology, we also examined several case studies.
This provided a sound basis for the professional judgment workshop in
the afternoon.

Lunch was sponsored by the College Board and TERI.

Following lunch, the following updates were given:

Brian Ghanoo: Brian reminded everyone that NYSHESC was still
accepting applications for the training grant.

Anna Kopit: Anna stated that the current membership was 431, an all
time high, which is 34 more than last year. The goal for next year is
to have an even higher number.

The next meeting will be held on February 24, 2006 at Hunter College.
The topic will be Managing Time – 24 Hours and Counting. It will be
sponsored by Nelnet.

Shelley Worrell: Shelley reported that Region VI received a total of
$9,500 in sponsorship for the Holiday Meeting and that the balance in
the bank is $9653.

The $10 that was paid, per person, for the holiday meeting by each
could either be refunded, put towards the spring/summer outing or
donated to the NYSFAAA Scholarship.

Angela Van Dekker: Angela gave an Exec. Council report. She reported
that a vote still had to be held on S1932 Budget Reconciliation. She
recommended that we all contact our elected Representative at
Senate.gov or House.gov.

--Origination fee does decrease over time, but puts back mandatory
guarantee fee.
--The savings is being diverted from financial aid to other expenditures.

The Governor’s budget – one proposal – will raise full time to 15
credits vs.12 credits.

College will be required to pre-fund 2006-2007 Tap for those who do
not have a high school diploma until they have achieved ~ 24 credit
hours. This will especially impact community colleges.

The February 13 and 14th New York State Legislative Forum – Training
Lobbying and Issues in Higher Education in New York.

In April or May, Regions 6 & 7 would have a joint Intermediate
Training Workshop.

Jim Briggs – Tax Detective will conduct a workshop the week of
February 20th.

Novice Training will take place June 2-9th in Cobbleskill

A location, that can accommodate 150-200 people, is needed for the
tri-regional meeting the week of May 12-19.

EASFA Graduate Concerns Symposium will be held March 23-24 in
Washington. A list serve is also available.

There is still time left for writers for the NYSFAAA’s Web Letter

Laura Dominy passed away and the Executive Council voted to give a
scholarship in her name.

The next Executive Council will take place on January 29-31st.

The updates were followed by the session on Professional Judgement.
