The December 6th meeting of NYSFAAA Region VI was held at Caliber Training Institute. Anna Kopit welcomed everyone and Chris Constable reported a balance of approximately $15,000. He also reported that there have been a few hitches while trying to change signors on the account.

Mike Turner gave the HESC update.  He honed on:

-         HESC’s holiday schedule

-         Lenders can view credit reports for Plus Loans on line, for a 2nd review

-         December 13 & 14th Admin Workshops in NYC

-         December 12 Admin Workshop Long Island

Wayne Harewood and Patti Herbst were the presenters for the day. The topic of discussion was Where NYSFAAA is Going in the Future! Where do you Want Them to Go?

The following issues/questions were discussed:

Why do we need a long range plan?

-         Shared vision of what we want to achieve

-         Discuss goals and objectives

-         Provide template for future leaders

-         Identify and over come obstacle

Why does Region VI have low school participation?

-         Work load in office

-         Offices may be understaffed

Suggestions:

-         Have webinars

-         Try to keep meetings centralized

-         May be a need for less meetings

-         Have Directors reach out to other Directors to find out why individuals don’t attend meetings

-         Reach out to others via word of mouth

-         Send topics of interest to Brian Ghanoo or Anna Kopit

-         Have specialized topics/agenda items geared towards Directors and some geared towards counselors, lenders, etc.

-         Leave copies of meeting agendas at schools

-         Pod casting – tape meetings-able to view at anytime

-         Change email format of information/agendas sent. Need to subtly solicit people to come to meetings

-         May have to plan meetings/trainings 3-6 moths in advance

Next Generation Committee

Chris Constable and Anne Kopit reported that Dave Canaski asked several members of NYSFAAA to a committee together to try and find out what younger members of NYSFAAA had to say.

A summit was held in Albany and participants were asked to list areas of concern. They were asked to rank 10 different areas and focus on 5 of the 10.

The 5 areas are:

  1. Membership & Mentoring
  2. Novice
  3. Website/Communications
  4. Long Range Planning
  5. Diversity

It was suggested that NYSFAAA has to be made more attractive. The following suggestions were made:

-         Have Mentor/NYSFAAA Training

-         Present certificates to individuals who complete a mentor seminar/workshop

-         Have novice training as part of the conference and recognize these individuals at the conference in front of hundreds of their peers

Another suggestion was to start developing our own individuals to do presentations since there is money earmarked for training/professional development. This would also stop us form having to look outside of NYSFAAA for presenters.

The next meeting will be held at Mary Mount Manhattan on January 11, 2008. The topics of discussion will be:

Strategies for Helping Undergraduates Prepare for Graduate & Professional Schools and Principles of Needs Analysis 08/09.
