The Scholarship Unit has three state funded scholarship programs, one federally funded scholarship program and two private scholarship programs. In 1995-96 the three state funded scholarship programs will total approximately 410 awards for $2,980,000.00. The federally funded scholarship program will total approximately 400 awards for $1,857,000.00. Applicants for any of these scholarship programs MUST be residents of New York State.

The Regents Health Care Scholarship
Pending approval by the NYS Legislature, one hundred awards are available annually for New York State residents who are economically disadvantaged and/or a member of an underrepresented minority group who are beginning or are engaged in an approved program in medicine or dentistry. Award winners may receive up to $10,000 per year, for a maximum of four academic years. Upon completion of their professional training, scholarship recipients must agree to practice medicine or dentistry in a designated shortage area of New York State for one year for each annual award received. Note: Applications are available and will be accepted January through May every year.
The Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship
Pending approval by the NYS Legislature, two hundred and twenty awards are available annually to New York State residents who are economically disadvantaged and/or a member of an underrepresented minority group, who are beginning or engaged in an approved program leading to a degree in a profession licensed by the Regents. Award winners may receive up to $5,000 per year, for a maximum of four academic years (unless enrolled in a program recognized by the Regents as requiring more than four years to complete). Scholarship recipients must agree to work in New York State in their chosen profession or field for one year for each annual award received. Note: Applications are available and will be accepted January through May every year.
The Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Program
Pending approval by the NYS Legislature, eighty awards are available annually for physicians who are residents of New York State and who agree to practice medicine in areas of New York State designated by the Regents as having a severe shortage of physicians. Award recipients may receive up to $10,000 per year, for a maximum of four years, for repayment of education loans incurred while enrolled in an undergraduate (preprofessional) or medical education program. Award recipients must agree to practice primary care in a physician shortage area for one year for each annual award received. However, in no case shall the total number of months of service required be less than twenty-four. Applications are available and will be accepted January through May every year.
The Cook-Batcheller Scholarship
Catherine Phillips Cook and George Sherman Batcheller (Cooke-Batcheller) Scholarships are funded by a 1975 bequest of $140,000 from the will of Katherine Batcheller to the New York State Board of Regents. Up to two Cook-Batcheller Scholarships may be awarded each year to Saratoga Springs High School graduates for the first year of full-time academic study at any accredited college or university in New York State (but not in the city of Saratoga Springs) or in France. (The scholarship is for one year only and is not renewable.) The amount of the award is limited to the total cost of attendance at a postsecondary institution, less any State, Federal, or other scholarships or grants received or receivable by the awardee and is subject to the availability of funds.
The Regent Bridgman Scholarship
A scholarship established by bequest of Herbert L. Bridgman who served as a member of the Board of Regents (1917-1924). This scholarship provides financial assistance to students attending Amherst College (Massachusetts) who are New York State residents. The school's financial aid office selects and recommends students to be granted awards covering the cost of college expenses. Awards are renewable and generally vary from about $500 minimum each year. All recipients must demonstrate financial need and priority is given to minority students.
